Good nutrition is the foundation of human health. With this in mind, the role of the dietician in helping you maintain your health, or achieving health, cannot be underestimated. We are, after all, experts in diet and nutrition.

Unfortunately, everyone seems to feel that they are an expert when it comes to diet and nutrition. Everyone from your hairdresser to your personal trainer to your doctor, has a little nugget of nutrition advice to offer. And don't forget the huge number of self-proclaimed nutrition gurus on the ever expanding world wide web - the place we all go to for advice (I have to confess that I am guilty of this too).

More and more, I feel like it has become my job to filter out the nutrition noise. Sift out the truly bad advice and analyse the good advice in order to find the best possible diet for you, whether your first priority is weight loss, or heart health, or eating a vegetarian diet. Advice needs to be based on scientific evidence, not on what your best friends' aunt's gym instructor says.

There is no single diet for every person. Although we all need to eat food for energy and health, there are subtle differences in our genetic makeup that determine how we metabolise the food we eat. We all have different food preferences, some people crave sugar, others crave salt, and a few lucky ones have no cravings. Some people need more fat in their diet, while others need more carbohydrate. We all need more vegetables!

It is at this time of year that Vitality members seem to find themselves short of points that would help them maintain their Diamond status and therefore their benefits and rewards.
