New Year's Resolutions - Set yourself up for success!
Welcome to 2018!
I hope your year has begun well and you are ready to make this year your best one ever!
- Did you set yourself some goals on the 1st of January?
- Did you make them S.M.A.R.T.?
- Do you have a plan to achieve your goals?
- Are your goals related to health, fitness and weight loss?
Everybody thinks that dieticians live for January with all of the New Year's Resolutions that have been set and the good intentions that people are talking about come the beginning of a new year. Yes, to a certain extent business is better than average in January. However, for most people, January is a tough month financially, with the over-spending that happens in December, January school fees, uniforms and supplies, and the need to still put food on the table. What this translates into is resolutions that never get off the ground.
- "There is too much going on in January, I will do it in February"
- "Now is not a good time"
- "I know what I need to do, I will do it on my own"
- "I will just lose the holiday weight and then I will see the dietician / go to the gym"
What has your excuse been? Or have you made a start?
In my professional opinion, starting a diet on the 1st of January or on a Monday, doesn't work. It gives you license to be lazy and eat badly until the designated day. And then what happens? You do just that! You think that you can eat whatever you want and lie on the couch and watch tv with a bag of chips. And then it spirals out of control. I see a lot of people who do exactly this, feel like they have let themselves down, and then just keep on doing it.
We all have the ability to eat well and exercise. We just need to decide to do it. And we need to take action now! Not on the first day of the month, or the first day of the week. Pigs will grow wings and fly before that day comes. Make today the day! Make the decision and do it! It is not as hard as it seems. There may be setbacks along the way, but so what?! Nothing is perfect and life happens.
