Wellness Day Dietician

The last quarter of the year is very busy for those of us involved in corporate wellness days. If you follow me on
Facebook or LinkedIn you will have seen that I have been out of my cozy little home office, working in big corporate offices all over Johannesburg and Pretoria.

I think some of these days are more beneficial than others. I always try to make my contribution as interesting and engaging as possible.

Most staff members are most interested in the health screening offered by their medical aid. They want their points or benefits more than anything else. But what happens when the nurse tells you that you are
overweight, or your blood pressure is dangerously high, or your cholesterol levels need attention, or your blood sugar indicates that you have diabetes? Some of them may be able to offer you some advice, some may even bring a dietician along to the health day. But what if that is not enough?

That is where the corporate
wellness dietician comes in! Sure, we can't give you a complete consultation at the wellness day, but we can point you in the right direction. We are there to help you!

One of my favourite things to do at a health day is a display of how much sugar is in a variety of commonly consumed snacks and drinks. It never fails to shock! When you consider that the recommended daily limit for added sugar is just 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men, a chocolate that has 6 teaspoons of sugar in a single portion, means that there is no room for anymore. No sweetened yoghurt, no muffin for afternoon tea and no sugar in your tea or coffee. My little display has proven to be a great ice breaker that gets most staff members talking. In fact everyone loves it so much that I now have my little jars displayed permanently in my office.

In fact everyone is so amazed by how much sugar we consume, so quickly and easily in a day, that I compiled an infographic based on my wellness day display.*

What are the benefits of having a dietician at your
wellness day?
Dieticians are all about prevention and helping you to live the best life you can with plenty of energy to achieve your goals. That means that we are all about optimising productivity. A healthy, well-nourished staff member will be far more efficient than someone who does not eat well. And… the well-nourished staff member will take fewer sick days and manage their
stress better!

Working from home means that I actually quite enjoy getting out and having a different view and LOTS of people to talk to from time to time.
